SARAH BOROW
catharsis
I make socially reflective, reflexive, and confrontational work. I work in both representational and non-representational means to emphasize the vastness of patriarchy. My work touches on the history of womanhood, femininity, and feminism to address how deep the roots of patriarchy have grown.
I am inspired to create work based on my own grappling with patriarchy, the male gaze, and the chaos and calm related to it. Our world is intrinsically tied to the sexualization of “other” bodies, bodies that are not those of white men, creating a call to critically engage with the exploitation of corporeality through direct, confrontational means. This call manifests in my use of portraiture, both realistic and abstracted. I often opt to use found imagery from old magazines for my realistic work, reasserting how patriarchy has been built over centuries. Lately I have found myself drawn to the nonrepresentational, focusing on the feeling derived from making the work rather than the visual outcome of the work itself. I have been using both oils and acrylics, as well as found material, with a hyper focus on the creational aspect itself to create work that is cathartic and process based. I find that in working in this mode I am lost in the reflective commentary that follows relating to my place in our patriarchal world as a woman. My work is in conversation with everyone who encounters it, while conversing and reflecting our greater society as well.
I intend to create dialogic work, work that sparks thought, conversation, or reflection relating to patriarchy. Personally, I crave catharsis and clarity, something I find through my work, and I hope my work calls for such a response that it allows for others to experience catharsis as well.
