SARAH BOROW
Embodiment (2023)
I make socially reflective, reflexive, and confrontational work. I work in non-representational processes to discuss existing in a body situated in contemporary society. My work reflects history, femininity, hegemony, and the body to address our understanding of the body as socially constructed.
I am inspired to create work based on my experience, which feels defined by my body. Our world understands humanity through the body, while conversely exploiting and sexualizing bodies, creating a call to critically engage with corporeality through direct means. This call manifests in my use of the canvas as body. I create automatic “portraits”, focusing on energy transference from body to canvas. I use oil on unstretched canvas with an emphasis on mark making, intending to create movement that is reminiscent of the body. My work is in conversation with those who are part of it and everyone who encounters it, while reflecting our greater society and referencing Abstract Expressionism. My goal is for my work to spark conversation and make viewers question portraiture, representation, and the body itself.
I intend to create dialogic work that creates thought, conversation, or reflection relating to the body. I crave catharsis and peace, something I find through my work, and I hope my work calls for such a response that it allows for others to experience bodily peace as well.
